Edvard Munch
Edvard Munch was born in 1863 and began to study at the royal drawing school in Oslo. In 1885 he visited Paris for the first time and in 1889 he had his first one-man exhibition, which brought him a state scholarship. He visited Berlin in 1892 and exhibited his work but which caused a scandal and had to be closed.

From 1896 he used many graphic media, publishing a large number of famous illustrations around 1900. In 1904 he became a member of the Berlin Secession. He returned to Norway in 1908, settling in the small fishing town of Kragero. His eyesight began to fail in the 1930s and he died in 1944.

Edvard Munch developed a personal style to use colour and form as vehicles to express atmosphere.
