Degas specialized in scenes of contemporary life,in cluding dancers,entertainers and women at their toilette.His mastery of techique was superb,and he experimented with various media including pasted.Degas remains a popular artist today,his changing styles and preoccupation's are well represented.

Degas exhibited from the beginning with the Impressionists in Paris.He was able to follow an independent path and his private income meant that he was not forced to attract buyers.

Degas was born in 1834 and spent most of his life in Paris.He was trained by the acadermic painter Louis Lamothe.In 1856/7 he was in Rome and subsequently often travelled to Italy.He deeply admired Ingres but soon developed an Impressionist approach,under the influence of Manet,whom he knew well.

Degas was a reclusive man ,though framed as a brilliant conversationalist.He practise the new technique of potography,which perhaps affected his approach to composition.He was a sculpter as well as painter.He died in 1917.
